Skills & Certs

1Building the Right Knowledge Base

Before you join

  • Accounting Standards / Ind AS basics — revenue recognition, leases, financial instruments
  • Basic Excel — VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivots, nested IF, data validation
  • Direct & Indirect Tax fundamentals — GST return structure, TDS provisions
  • Companies Act basics — board resolutions, related party transactions, CARO
  • Business writing — emails, MOMs, working paper documentation

Once you’re in

  • Learn the firm’s audit tool in week one — EY Canvas, KPMG Clara, PwC Aura, Deloitte Omnia
  • Read the client’s industry background before every new engagement
  • Keep a “learnings diary” — one line a day; it becomes gold for CVs and interviews later

2CV / Resume
Recruiters spend 20–30 seconds on a first pass. Structure: name/contact/LinkedIn → academics (10th, 12th, Foundation/Inter scores, attempts) → articleship firm/role or “seeking articleship” → skills → certifications → extracurriculars.
⚡ Golden rules
One page, always. Zero spelling errors — an instant reject at a firm built on accuracy. Quantify: “Assisted in audit of a company with ₹120 Cr turnover” beats “Worked on audit assignments.” Never inflate — partners cross-question CVs.

3Communication Skills

In interviews

  • Rehearse a 60-second self-intro — education, why CA, why this firm, one strength
  • Prep for “walk me through your resume” and behavioral questions
  • Never say “I don’t know” and stop — attempt an answer with your reasoning

On the job

  • Clear email subject lines — e.g. “Query on Fixed Asset Register — ABC Ltd Audit”
  • Ask after attempting: “I tried X, got Y, is this right?” not “what do I do?”
  • Client calls — speak slowly, confirm understanding, follow up with a summary email
  • Avoid casual Hinglish in professional written communication, even internal chats

4Professional Attire
For MenFor Women
Formal trousers + full-sleeve shirt, solid/subtle checksFormal shirt/blouse + trousers/skirt, or plain/subtle sarees/salwar
Polished leather shoes, matching beltClosed/formal open-toe footwear, minimal jewelry
Tie/blazer for client visits — check with team firstID card visible at all times on client premises
⚠️ Don’t assume
Fridays/internal days may allow smart-casuals — but client site visits are strictly formal, no exceptions, regardless of internal office norms.

5Using References the Right Way
References help you get noticed, not selected — the interview still has to go well. Reach out to seniors already at the firm via internal referral programs. Keep the ask specific: “Could you refer me for the Audit intake if there’s an opening?” Always attach your CV with a short note on why that firm/service line interests you.
✅ Etiquette
Thank the person regardless of outcome. Never embellish your profile beyond what’s true — it reflects on them. Follow up once after 1–2 weeks, don’t chase repeatedly.

6Finding Vacancies
  • ICAI’s Articleship Placement Portal — most reliable, bi-annual windows (confirm current dates on icai.org)
  • Firm career pages directly — Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC list openings outside the ICAI window too
  • LinkedIn — follow firm pages, set job alerts
  • College/institute placement cells — many firms run direct hiring drives
  • Naukri/Internshala — secondary, for affiliate-firm openings
🎯 Tip
Apply early — Big 4 shortlist fast and close intake once seats fill. Decide your preferred service line (Audit/Tax/Advisory/Consulting) before applying.

7Important Skills & Certifications
CertificationBest For
Advanced Excel / Power BIEveryone — high ROI, short duration
Diploma in IFRS (ACCA)Audit/Assurance with MNC clients
US CMA / CPA modulesInternational career path
DISA / ISA (ICAI)IT/Systems Audit specialization, post-Final
GST Certification (ICAI)Indirect Tax placement
⚡ Don’t let certs distract
Sequence these around your exam calendar — they support your CA journey, they shouldn’t compete with it. The one soft skill you can’t skip: time management between office hours, client deadlines, and study leave.

Quick Checklist Before You Apply
  • One-page, error-free CV ready
  • LinkedIn profile complete, professional photo updated
  • ICAI SSP portal details updated
  • Formal attire ready — at least 3–4 outfits
  • Basic Excel skills practiced
  • Self-introduction rehearsed for interviews
  • Shortlist of 2–3 seniors/contacts for referrals

While you prepare for articleship placements, don’t let your exam prep slip — a structured test planner keeps your 4-revision cycle on track through both cycles.
